My wife and I spent a few days in Milan before we went to Venice in June last year. I found Milan beautiful and the people were so friendly and hospitable.
Milan is pretty expensive for food and drink. But taxis, accommodation etc. were about UK average. To be honest, if you’re from London, the prices may be more on par with what you’re used to anyway. But then, as with most places, it depends on where you choose to dine etc. The restaurants and cafes in the main touristy or fashionable areas are more expensive, but if you head off the beaten track, you’ll find it’s more affordable.
We ate in quite expensive restaurants, but we were only there for a couple of days and got a little care-free with cash! Still, the food was amazing! I’ve recommended Joia, a one-star Michelin restaurant in Milan. It is mostly a vegetarian restaurant with some fish items.
I have also heard very good things about Aimo e Nadia although I didn’t have the chance to eat there. It is also a one-star michelin. You can visit “Martin Pescatore” Via Friuli 46 for fish, it’s a little but very good one. For Pizza, try “Al basilico fresco” Viale Umbria, 85, very good pizza, even without mozzarella.
We stayed a little out of town at Hotel Poliziano Fiera but we could easily walk the half hour walk into the centre via Sempione Park and, given that the weather was beautiful at the weekend, we did this on several occasions. In fact, we walked absolutely everywhere, including to and from San Siro! My feet were killing me after three days of this but we got to see so much of the city this way and stopped off at lots of wee cafes and bars along the way which made it much easier!
