The “Must-see” places: Saaremaa’s Eiffel Tower, Loch Ness and Great Canyon

There are places in Saaremaa that one simply must see!
The first in the list would be the Kuressaare fortress from the 14th century.
Lake Kaali - created from a meteorite
It looks just like a completely round bowl filled with green water and one is standing on the rim. It has been here for over 2000 years and it was a popular location among ancient people for sacrifice. It still is believed to have a certain magic about it. The diameter of the crater, born from an explosion resulting from the meeting of a meteorite and the Earth, is up to 110 meters, making it one of the biggest meteorite craters in Europe.

The Panga Cliff - the highest of the island
Beautiful shores surround Saaremaa and are covered with rocks, canebrake, and birds. In some places, in the west and north coast of the island, the shorelines rise higher and form cliffs. The highest of them is the Cliff of Panga with its 21-meter altitude. Here the old natives used to sacrifice for luck and good fortune in fishing.

The windmills of Angla - the old way of labor
Close to one of the most beautiful medieval churches - Karja - you can witness quite an unusual view. In Angla, where there used to be nine windmills in a row, five remain standing, sharing and showing the strength of the winds. Four of them are post mills which were common in Saaremaa, and one is a Dutch mill. Recently, a swing park was founded next to the windmill park, where you can «y out different kinds of swings.

Maasi hill fort
Only ruins have remained of Saaremaa’s second medieval fortress 4 km north of Orissaare. Fortunately, the ruins were recently excavated and visitors can imagine what the fortress would have looked like if the King of Denmark had not ordered it to be blown up in 1576 out of fear of the Swedes.
