It would be a sin to leave the island without trying the fish. Nowadays the fish is more rare than it used to be when the nets were so full that the fishermen took only the liver out of the codfish and threw the rest back into the sea. The best fish on the island are the smoked eels and flatfish, but you should also try the Baltic herring, sprat or herring that the locals still love. Also, look for codfish, salmon, trout and garfish, also called the “poor man’s eel”.
When eating out, prefer the Estonian cuisine, although it is really a mixture of the Russian and German cuisine. Plenty of potatoes, sauerkraut and pork, beef or mutton is waiting for you in every eatery.
It is possible but rather complicated to travel in Saaremaa by bus. It requires love for adventures and willingness to combine. The easy way out is to rent a car or a bicycle. There are only a few cycle tracks, but not a lot of traffic nor hills or mountains. There is no railway on the island but some straight roads represent places where the railway used to run through once.
There are many different forms of accommodation in Saaremaa - hotels, guest houses, hikers’ lodges, tourism farms, holiday apartments, chalets, and campsites. In the summer months it is advisable to book well in advance.
