On the splurge issue, I think it’s impossible to name two don’t miss places w/o determining type of food or ambiance. One of the things I love about London is their ethnic food, esp. Indian which is far superior to anything in the US.
My favorite was always Bomabay Brasserie for both food and over the top ambiance. Rules is the popular place for an upscale, English meal (owned by the same folks as the Ivy, another popular place). I like Langans Brasserie for the “buzz” of the downstairs dining room or the Venice mural in the upstairs.
For the kids, there are several Italian chains that are far superior to any US chains. ASK and Pizza Express are both very good imho. If they’ll eat mussels, Belgo Central is a Belgian famous for mussels and fries and charges the time (ie 5 GBP at 5pm, 7GBP at 7pm).
The Rainforest Cafe is a great place for kids also because the restaurant is actually made into a jungle with trees and waterfalls and most kids therefore love it, however it is a typical tourist place.
You can go to deffo Harrods too, its brilliant for kids, and the Krispy Kreme donut factory on the ground floor is HEAVEN. There is also the amazing staircases, fab toy dept and the wonderful ice cream parlour. I am taking dd1 up to London for the weekend in a couple of weeks and I intend to spend a good part of it in Harrods - also its near Kensington Gardens with the Peter Pan statue which is lovely to see.
